A study published in Scientific Reports says that global temperatures will keep rising even if we reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero, according to USA Today.
Scientists created projections of both global temperature and sea level rises based on changes in Earth’s climate. The projections showed that extracting large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it underground is the only way to possibly stop the warming from occurring.
“According to our models, humanity is beyond the point of no return when it comes to halting the melting of permafrost using greenhouse gas cuts as the single tool,” said Jorgen Randers, the lead author of the study.
The study also reports that the planet’s temperatures will be about 5.4 degrees warmer in the year 2500 than temperatures in 1850. Experts declared that achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, which Japan recently pledged to do, is “just the start” of mitigating climate change.
