Organic Baby Clothes: Are They Worth the Extra Cost?
Going organic doesn't just apply to the food we eat anymore. Organic is becoming a lifestyle, and for many people, that lifestyle starts at the beginning of their children's lives. More and more parents are making this change, and this trend toward all things organic and natural continues to grow -- especially for babies.
Organic baby products do have a higher price tag, but there are some very compelling factors behind parents' decisions to buy organic, according to Bethany Grosser, owner of Little Spruce Organics.
"Safety is the most common factor," Grosser. said. "Organic textiles are processed without synthetic additives, reducing parents' concerns about chemical residue left on the fabric that touches their babies' skin." The safety factor does indeed seem to influence parents, as many have started buying not just organic clothes but also organic toys, reducing fears of babies ingesting toxic finishes and chemical additives.
Comfort is another factor, according to Grosser, whose online store offers only products made from organic materials. "Parents love the fact that organic clothing is incredibly soft, suitable for sensitive baby skin, and absorbs moisture while still feeling dry."
New parents spend a lot of money on their babies, and much of this expense is often spent on products made entirely from synthetic materials in factories that emit toxic chemicals into the air and that are soaked in chemicals such as petroleum scours, flame and soil retardants, and formaldehyde.
As parents, why not pause for a moment and look at how much is actually necessary and what is thrown out or never used? Why not focus on quality over quantity and reduce the amount of garbage we surround our babies with by purchasing only a few, necessary items that are 100-percent organic and natural?
Babies are simple creatures with basic needs. Your baby won't miss a thing if you reduce the size of his or her wardrobe and toy collection and invest in just a few organic baby outfits and handmade wooden toys that can be passed down for generations. In fact, your baby will probably be even happier wearing that soft, organic clothing and chewing on natural, unfinished wood.
