AECOM Publishes Papers on Management, Remediation

AECOM Environment has published two new white papers: Climate Change & Water Resources - Adaptation Strategies for Industry, and Identifying the Cause of Toxicity in Sediments.

AECOM Environment is the global environmental management practice of AECOM.

Prepared by the firm's water and natural resources experts, the paper on climate change outlines potential impacts of climate change on water resources, the risks to industry, and how to develop adaptation strategies to reduce and manage those risks. Issues such as water supplies, flooding, more complex permitting, and stricter wetlands protection are addressed.

”Many industries are already affected by changes in precipitation patterns associated with climate change,” said Don Galya, vice president of water and natural resources. “This paper will help businesses assess and implement cost-effective adaptation strategies.”

Identifying the Cause of Toxicity in Sediments examines the role of sediment toxicity testing in risk assessment and details how toxicity testing and broad-based sediment evaluation methods help determine the magnitude and extent of sediment contamination, leading to potential cost savings for remediation activities. The paper describes how these toxicity identification evaluation methods were used in conjunction with the new ASTM Guide, which was researched and written by AECOM, to study sediment toxicity as part of a U.S. Department of Defense-funded project to develop a wetlands risk assessment strategy.

“Advances in sediment toxicity testing facilitate more informed decisions about site contamination and restoration,” commented David Pillard, senior toxicologist and author. “And this can lead to more cost-effective remediation and site redevelopment projects which enhance a community’s environmental and economic quality of life.”
