Umbria, Italy: A Top Ecotourism Destination

The historic Italian region offers eco-retreats and activities to responsible travelers

For those looking to take a trip to Italy but also want to remain environmentally responsible, Umbria might be the place for you. The historic Italian region is close to Rome and Florence and is a small treasure in the center of Italy. Thanks to its attention to renewable energy, sustainable tourism and recycling, the city is one of the country’s most eco-friendly regions.

Umbria plays host to touristic structures that place a lot of emphasis on environmental protection, such as organic bed and breakfasts, eco-villages and ‘agriturismi’ – farm accommodations with restaurants. One example of an eco-village is the Free University of Alcatraz, a solar community that has a hotel and restaurant, with a focus on Fairtrade, organic, ecological and ethical products. The village is very close to historic cities such as Perugia, Assisi and Montalcino, and offers a variety of workshops, massages and courses for visors.

Umbria also features some memorable countryside retreats, complete with the region’s traditional food and wine.

Finally, the regional authority has created a Green Card for tourists, allowing them to choose different tours and rent an electric car to move around the area.
