Mining Company Forms Sustainability Professorship with Canadian University

The mining company has funded the position at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, with $625,000 for a five-year period.

Toronto-based Kinross Gold Corporation has extended its relationship with Queen’s University a short distance away in Kingston. The mining company has extended the professorship in mining and sustainability that it established in 2007 for five more years and renamed it the Kinross Professorship in Mining Health and Safety.

Kinross is contributing $625,000 to the 170-year-old university to fund the professorship for five years from May 1, 2012. The focus of the professorship will include, among other aspects: the delivery of courses on mining health and safety at an undergraduate and graduate level; development and delivery of short courses on mining health and safety for industrial practitioners; and development of educational materials in identified areas of focus within mining health and safety.

"Health and safety is a foundation of responsible mining and is central to a successful mining culture," said James Crossland, executive vice-president of external relations and corporate responsibility at Kinross. "We believe this professorship will help to reinforce the critical importance of safety with a new generation of mining graduates, and will provide a valuable safety resource for the industry,"
