Manitoba Commission OKs Bord na Mona's Wastewater Biofilter

The Manitoba Conservation Environmental Services Commission recently approved the Bord na Móna Puraflo® Peat Fiber Biofilter wastewater treatment solution for installation throughout the Manitoba province, in accordance with the authority under Section 25 of the Onsite Wastewater Management Systems Regulation.

The approval was effective July 20, according to Michael Sundberg, regional sales and marketing manager for Bord na Móna Environmental Products U.S. Inc.

“The Puraflo Peat Biofilter treatment system is a … low energy natural wastewater treatment solution for on-site wastewater treatment requirements,” Sundberg said.

The key to the system is that it uses a natural peat fiber, which is a byproduct of the energy production industry. It removes greater than 99 percent of harmful bacteria through a natural treatment process without the need for chlorination or ultraviolet radiation. The most common system applications include individual residential sites, community cluster systems, light commercial, schools, and subdivision developments. The system is particularly suited for intermittent flow applications such as cottages, churches, parks, and resorts as it retains the beneficial bacteria in the media.

Headquartered in Dublin Ireland, Bord na Móna is a multi-national $550-million full line provider of products and services in the environmental, energy, fuels, and horticulture markets. The company's U.S. division is headquartered in Greensboro, N.C.
