EPA Announces $3.6 Million in Available Environmental Education Grants
The agency seeks applicants for the funds, which will go to local environmental projects.

The EPA is inviting applications for its 2023 Environmental Education (EE) Local Grant Program, earmarking up to $3.6 million for the initiative. The EPA will give out between 30 and 40 grants across its 10 regions, each ranging from $50,000 to $100,000.
According to a release dated Sept. 14, these grants will focus on projects that examine the overlap between environmental issues and strategies for climate change adaptation and mitigation. The program also emphasizes the prevention of future water quality and human health concerns among other environmental themes.
“It is more important now than ever that we understand the environmental changes happening around us,” EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan said in a statement. “Investing in environmental education is investing in America’s future, and these grants will ensure that communities have access to quality tools to get involved – and stay involved – at a local level.”
Aiming to raise public consciousness about these issues, the funded projects will equip individuals with the skills required to make informed decisions. The EPA has made solicitation notices available in each of its regions, directing applicants to apply to the Regional Notice of Funding Opportunity corresponding to their project's location.
Special attention is given to projects that will notably enhance environmental literacy and inspire behavior benefiting the environment in local, especially underserved, communities. The EPA defines these underserved areas based on several criteria, including high-poverty rates and Title I school designations.
The deadline to apply for the 2023 EE Local Grant Program is Nov. 8, 2023. More details about the funding opportunities, as well as the application process, can be found on www.grants.gov and the EE Grant Solicitation Notice website. Furthermore, to aid potential applicants, the Office of Environmental Education will organize a webinar on crafting a competitive application.
