June 2023 Sets New Record for World’s Warmest June in 174 Years

Last month’s average global surface temperature was over 61 degrees Fahrenheit.

Did June 2023 feel hotter than normal to you? Well, according to numbers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), it was.

Per a news release, June 2023 was the warmest June our planet has seen in 174 years.

June 2023’s average global surface (land and ocean) temperature was 61.79 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 1.89 degrees higher than the 20th-century average.

Where June 2023 ranks for each region varies slightly. The United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the Caribbean region all reported that June 2023 was their warmest June. While Africa experienced its third-warmest June in 2023 (tied with June 2017), South America, Europe and Asia saw their fourth-warmest June.
