Environmental Science Winners Focus on Drugs in Water, PAHs
The Adventus Group, an international remediation biotechnology enterprise, rejoined the Association for Environmental Health & Sciences Foundation to recognize emerging environmental scientists during the “20th Annual International Conference on Soils, Sediments, Water, and Energy” held in San Diego, Calif.
This year’s winners, who received $500 awards, were Kimberly Rickman, California State University at Long Beach, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, for her platform presentation on "Removing Pharmaceuticals from Contaminated Waters using Radical Reactions” and Ryoji, Kyoto University, Port and Airport Research Institute, Coastal and Estuarine Environment Research Group, for his poster presentation on “Environmental Fate of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Sediments of Nagoya Port.”
Paul Kostecki, Ph.D., president of the Foundation, said "Through the generosity of Adventus, this year’s event marks their sixth annual sponsorship of the awards. It is clear the Adventus Student Award competition is an excellent way to encourage outstanding students to share their work and give our members a chance to see what’s on the minds of the next generation.”
Alan Seech, Ph.D., chief executive officer of Adventus Group, remarked that “selecting the winning themes was extremely difficult, and we believe the industry will be hearing more from these students in years ahead."
The presentations were judged by representatives of Adventus Americas Inc. and the Conference Scientific Advisory Board – on originality, organization, communication with the audience, research techniques and overall quality of the presentation.
The foundation is an organization of multidisciplinary, environmental professionals and was created to facilitate communication and foster cooperation among those concerned with soil protection and cleanup.
