EPA terminates agreement to design cleanup of Waukegan Harbor
The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency has notified the city of Waukegan that it has terminated the agreement to
design a project to clean up Waukegan Harbor using funds provided by the Great
Lakes Legacy Act.
EPA is ending the agreement for several reasons and stated in a letter to the
city dated Nov. 6:
"The city of Waukegan has decided to pursue other goals,
such as future zoning and uses of the harbor area, which are unrelated to this
purpose of environmental cleanup. In light of the city's rejection of the
Waukegan Harbor Sediment Remediation project, it is futile to continue the
design and specifications work provided in this Project Agreement."
