EPA Adds PFHxS-Na to Toxics Release Inventory, Expanding PFAS Oversight

The EPA is broadening its PFAS reporting requirements by adding sodium perfluorohexanesulfonate to the Toxics Release Inventory, reinforcing federal efforts to increase chemical transparency and accountability.

The EPA is expanding its oversight of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, by adding sodium perfluorohexanesulfonate (PFHxS-Na) to the Toxics Release Inventory. The agency announced the update on Oct. 7, 2025, citing new toxicity information finalized earlier this year. PFHxS-Na is a salt form of perfluorohexanesulfonic acid, a chemical known for its persistence in the environment and potential health risks.

Under the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020, PFAS chemicals with finalized EPA toxicity values are automatically added to the TRI list. Facilities that manufacture, process or otherwise use PFHxS-Na above reporting thresholds must begin tracking their activities on Jan. 1, 2026. The first TRI reports including the substance, will be due July 1, 2027, covering activities in calendar year 2026.

The move is part of EPA’s ongoing efforts to increase transparency around PFAS use and disposal. The agency has steadily expanded the list of PFAS subject to TRI reporting since 2020, giving regulators, communities, and advocacy groups more insight into how these “forever chemicals” are managed.

EHS managers and compliance professionals are encouraged to review chemical inventories, update recordkeeping practices, and communicate with suppliers to ensure reporting accuracy and regulatory readiness.
