Dürr Builds CO₂-Efficient Paint Shop for Volkswagen in Mexico

Dürr has delivered a turnkey paint shop at Volkswagen’s Puebla plant featuring electrified drying systems, driverless transport, and advanced overspray separation to cut CO₂ emissions by 40 percent.

Dürr has completed a turnkey paint shop for Volkswagen in Puebla, Mexico, designed to significantly cut CO₂ emissions while boosting production efficiency. The facility, inaugurated in January, is one of the Volkswagen Group’s largest manufacturing plants.

The project includes two identical painting lines equipped with electrified technology, such as Dürr’s EcoInCure electric drying system, which reduces body heating times by 30 percent and lowers CO₂ emissions by about 40 percent compared to gas-fired systems. The shop also incorporates an electric exhaust air aftertreatment system, overspray separation technology, and advanced HEPA12 filtration.

Volkswagen Puebla now paints 90 vehicle bodies per hour across different models. The plant’s design allows for flexible adaptation to additional models, aided by a central high-bay warehouse and Dürr’s EcoProFleet driverless transport system controlled by DXQ software.

The facility integrates 170 sealing and painting robots, robotic cleaning systems, and AI-enabled process management. By combining electrified ovens, solvent-free exhaust air purification, and dry separation of overspray, the new paint shop reduces energy demand and greenhouse gas output while maintaining high throughput.

Dürr said the installation reflects its “Paint Shop of the Future” concept, aimed at increasing efficiency, accommodating model diversity, and aligning automotive production with sustainability goals.
