2022 Year in Review: A Look at the Average Monthly Temperatures Across Earth

Last year ranked as the sixth-warmest year in the last 143 years, according to the NOAA.

Last year made history as the sixth-warmest year Earth has seen in 143 years.

The year ended with an average land and ocean surface temp of 58.55 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Previously, 2021 was ranked as the sixth warmest, with an average temperature of 58.51 degrees Fahrenheit.

However, 2022 ranks slightly higher according to NASA and The European Commission's Copernicus. Both organizations found that 2022 was the fifth warmest.

Each month in 2022 also ranked among the top 10 warmest months since 1880. October was the fourth warmest; March, April and September were the fifth warmest; January, May, June, July and August were all sixth warmest; February ranked seventh warmest; December was the eighth warmest; and November was the ninth warmest.
