EPA Collecting Comments on Proposed NJ Superfund Site Cleanup Plan
The public can comment on the EPA’s proposed cleanup plan of mercury-contaminated soil at the New Jersey site until December 12.

The EPA is asking for the public’s input on a proposed cleanup plan for one Superfund site in New Jersey.
According to a news release, the agency wants to have 7,500 cubic yards of mercury-contaminated soil removed at the Pierson's Creek Superfund site in Newark, New Jersey. A 1.5-mile creek and tributaries at the site feed into an industrial area, including more than six acres of land and a nearby bay, the EPA said.
This proposed removal follows options from an Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis report, conducted after a settlement agreement between the EPA and 429 Delancy Associates LLC, according to the agency. In addition to getting rid of the soil, 429 Delancy Associates LLC, which owns part of the site, would also be responsible for paying the EPA for overseeing the project.

“We look forward to input from the public on this proposed work to remove mercury-contaminated soil,” said Regional Administrator Lisa F. Garcia in the news release. “This cleanup will further EPA’s commitment to reducing hazardous waste and environmental impacts in Newark.”
