John Kerry Appointed to Special Climate Change-Focused Position By President-Elect Biden

Former Secretary of State John Kerry has been appointed as the first ever Special Presidential Envoy on climate change.

President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team announced on November 23 that former Secretary of State John Kerry was appointed to the new post of special presidential envoy for climate, according to NPR.

Kerry’s role of climate envoy is a cabinet-level position. He will be the first climate official to have a seat on the National Security Council.

“America will soon have a government that treats the climate crisis as the urgent national security threat it is,” said Kerry in a statement on Twitter. “I’m proud to partner with the President-elect, our allies and the young leaders of the climate movement to take on this crisis at the President’s Climate Envoy.”

There are no extensive details about what Kerry’s position will entail, but it will involve dealing with climate change in terms of foreign policy.
