The Groundwater Foundation presents $100,000 to Give Clean Water to Low Income Families
On October 24, the Groundwater Foundation presented the Water Well Trust with a donation of $100,000. The donation is part of an effort to provide low-income families in the U.S. with clean water.
This massive donation is a step toward clean drinking water for low-income Americans. This month, Groundwater Foundation (GF) presented Water Well Trust (WWT) with a check that will fund a project to drill 10 wells in select states before the end of 2020.
Many Americans do not have access to clean drinking water. According to the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) press release, there are currently 2.9 million housing units lacking complete plumbing and access to clean, safe, affordable drinking water.
And what’s worse is those individuals often cannot afford to replace pipes or find access to drinking water. GF’s donation will now make clean water accessible to thousands of Americans through new drills.
The program pays for the initial cost of drilling the well and participating families are given a 20-year, one percent interest loan. The check was presented to the WWT by NGWA CEO Terry S. Morse, CAE, CIC.
“There is a tremendous need to help families struggling to make ends meet and they shouldn’t have to worry about access to clean, safe, affordable and sustainable water,” said Morse. “I’m thrilled we are partnering with the Water Well Trust to tackle this problem, we have a lot of work to do all across America.”
The GF and Water Well Trust started in May 2018 after NGWA merged with nonprofit GF. The NGWA and the WSC signed a five-year memorandum of understanding on December 3, 2018, that set a foundation for future collaborations between the two organizations.
The Water Well Trust is the nonprofit organization overseen by the Water Systems Council. It is one of the first projects being worked on by NGWA and WSC’s collaborative efforts.
