EPA Awards Grants Supporting Four State Pesticide Programs
The awarded grants include $574,000 to the Washington State Department of Agriculture, $302,000 to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, $394,000 to the Idaho State Department of Agriculture, and $445,000 to the Oregon Department of Agriculture.
EPA has awarded grants to four states to support their statewide pesticide programs. The awarded grants include $574,000 to the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA), $302,000 to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC), $394,000 to the Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA), and $445,000 to the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA).
These departments have authority over pesticide use in their individual states and conduct inspections, enforcement, training, and monitoring for pesticide use throughout their state. Actions carried out by these departments’ Pesticide programs include:
- Investigation and enforcement of possible pesticide misuse incidents;
- Assures the competency of restricted-use pesticides applicators through its certification and licensing program;
- Provide outreach to agricultural workers to protect them from pesticide exposures; Provides outreach and training to ensure that pollinators are protected from pesticide drift;
- Conducts inspections of pesticide products at retail outlets for proper EPA registration, labeling and establishment information;
- Evaluation of pesticides registered in the state for their potential to contaminate groundwater resources.
