North Carolina Superfund Site Receives Cleanup Settlement
The EPA has reached a $5.5 million settlement for the cleanup of Ward Transformer Superfund Site located in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The EPA and 173 parties recently announced a settlement to clean areas surrounding the Ward Transformer Superfund Site. Located near the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, the contaminated site consists of 11 acres in which electrical transformers were stored in the 1960s and 70s. Those transformers contained PBCs which were often spilled and caused soil and sediment contamination.
“This legal agreement ensures that the remaining PCB contamination surrounding the Ward Transformer Site in Raleigh will be cleaned up by potentially responsible parties,” said Anne Heard, EPA's Acting Regional Administrator for the Southeast. "EPA welcomes the path forward toward restoring the water bodies surrounding the Site so that future generations may enjoy them."
The EPA first assessed the site in 1973, and it was added to the National Priorities list in 2003. The settlement is now available for public comment for the next 30 days. For more information, please visit the Justice Department website.
