Applications Open for Companies Seeking to Win $4 Million Zayed Future Energy Prize
Prestigious global award recognizes companies, non-profits, and schools contributing to clean energy and sustainability.
The Zayed Future Energy Prize, which recognizes individuals, organizations and schools from around the world finding innovative solutions that are addressing energy access and security challenges and the world’s most critical environmental concerns, is once again calling for submissions and nominations to win this prestigious prize.
Submissions and nominations for the 9th cycle of the prize will close on June 27, 2016 and can be made online at http://zfepentry.com.
Since its inception in 2008, the Zayed Future Energy Prize has recognized some of the most innovative and visionary leaders in clean energy and renewables. The prize is divided into five categories: Small and Medium Enterprises, Large Corporations, Non-Profit Organizations, Global High Schools, and Lifetime Achievement.
“The Zayed Future Energy Prize recognizes and rewards those who have a vision for a better, more sustainable world,” said Dr. Nawal Al-Hosany, Director of the Zayed Future Energy Prize. “In doing so it empowers solutions in sustainability and clean energy which address the world’s most pressing global challenges. We look forward to another year of high-caliber submissions and nominations.”
Last year, a record 1,437 entries were received from 97 countries. Winners are recognized at a special ceremony during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) in January. Past US winners include Al Gore, d. light design, Ceres and the Bronx Design & Construction Academy.
“This is truly a global competition, fed by the desire around the world to find innovative solutions to our planet’s energy challenges,” Al Hosany said. “We believe by recognizing and empowering these individuals and organizations, we can help usher in a sustainable future for all.”
The $4 million prize is divided and awarded across four of the five categories:
- Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) – For-profit enterprises with less than $100 million in annual revenues, eligible to win a prize of $1.5 million.
- Non-Profit Organization (NPO/NGO) – Non-profit organizations, industry associations, research bodies or international bodies, eligible to win a prize of $1.5 million.
- Lifetime Achievement – Individuals who have made special contributions to sustainability, eligible for a prize of $500,000. (Lifetime Achievement winners must be nominated by third parties.)
- Global High Schools – Schools that teach grades 9 and above who submit a project proposal on specific measurable initiatives to promote sustainability. The total prize for this category is $500,000, $100,000 to be awarded each to five schools from the following regions: the Americas, Europe, Oceania, Africa and Asia.
- Large Corporations (revenues exceeding $100 million per year) – The fifth category of the prize, receives global recognition for their achievement but do not receive monetary compensation. (Large Corporations may also be nominated by third parties.)
Over the past eight years, winners have received more than $25 million in prize money and have touched the lives of over 202 million people by generating 360 million megawatt hours of electricity from renewables, reducing carbon emissions by 87 milllion tons and providing safe drinking water to 7 million people. In addition, 100 million people have been introduced to best practices for energy efficiency.
