China Embracing EVs

Chinese electric vehicle sales during 2015 more than tripled year to 331,100, according to the Xinhua News Agency report, which cites data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

China's State Council, the cabinet, announced new policies Feb. 24 supporting greater adoption of electric vehicles, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

These policies are part of efforts to achieve "revolutionary breakthroughs" in battery performance, and China is supporting cooperation among businesses, universities, and research institutions, according to the report, which says the council meeting was chaired by Premier Li Keqiang. Its statement said more battery charging facilities will be constructed -- the council earlier pledged to build more than 12,000 new ones by 2020.

CAAM reported last month that, during 2015, passenger cars production rose to 21,079,400 units and passenger cars sales to 21,146,300 units, up 5.8 percent and 7.3 percent year over year, respectively. This was the first year passenger car production exceeded 20 million; SUV production and sales were up 49.7 percent and 52.4 percent, respectively, in 2015.
