ISO Greenhouse Gas Standard Reaches Voting Stage

"The key areas of focus for ISO 14064-1 will be accounting for indirect greenhouse gas emissions and the linkage between that and renewable energy, which is a very challenging area," said Tom Baumann, chair of the ISO TC 207/SC7 committee that undertook the revision..

The International Organization for Standardization's ISO 14064 standard for greenhouse gas emissions has now reached the first voting stage, bringing it closer to publication, the organization announced. The review of ISO 14064-1 and ISO 14064-2 has now reached Committee Draft stage, meaning members involved have two months to vote and make their comments. The review was done by the technical committee ISO TC207/SC7, which is led by SCC and SAC, ISO's members in Canada and China, respectively.

"The key areas of focus for ISO 14064-1 will be accounting for indirect greenhouse gas emissions and the linkage between that and renewable energy, which is a very challenging area," said Tom Baumann, chair of the ISO TC 207/SC7 committee. "ISO 14064-2 is an important standard for supporting different types of GHG projects, including offset credits as well as internal projects and GHG technology projects. Improving how the standard bridges these activities is essential to helping entrepreneurs reduce GHG emissions. In addition, the committee has expertise from key organizations such as the UNFCCC, WRI, CDP, and The Gold Standard, ensuring we cover all the most pertinent areas and make it relevant for a constantly changing future."

ISO 14064-1 Greenhouse gases -- Part 1: Specification with guidance at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals will address some key GHG quantification issues and will include a more standardized reporting frame, ISO's Clare Naden reported July 24, adding that ISO 14064-2 Greenhouse gases -- Part 2: Specification with guidance at the project level for quantifcation, monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gas emission reductions or removal enhancements will be expanded to be applicable to carbon credit and innovative technology projects and organizations' internal projects.

The revision of ISO 14064 is expected to be completed in April 2016, she noted.
