Agencies Celebrate National Drinking Water Week

From May 3-9, agencies such as the Department of Environmental Protection in Pennsylvania and the Ohio EPA are honoring National Drinking Water Week.

More than 35 years ago, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) has celebrated National Drinking Water Week. This year, several government agencies are joining in on the festivities, and urging to communities to learn more about their drinking water.

The Ohio EPA is offering free online resources where residents can learn more about their public drinking water. The Ohio EPA is responsible for over 4,800 public water systems, keeping them free of contamination while also implementing more efficient water system designs and plans. Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is also celebrating National Drinking Water Week by encourages residents to conserve water and to prevent contamination by keeping pollution out of water resources.

To conserve water, the DEP says taking simple steps such as turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth, taking showers instead of baths, and washing pets outside where the lawn needs water can make a huge difference. Water pollution prevention can be just as easy by storing and disposing of household substances like cleaning solutions properly instead of pouring them down the sink.
