Millions in EPA Funding Available to Clean Up Brownfields Across the Country
The EPA has announced $11 million in funding for the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated Brownfield properties across the United States.
As part of the EPA’s Revolving Loan Funds (RLF), $11 million will be used for the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated Brownfield properties in the United States. The projects will create more than 700 jobs and leverage more than $57 million.
“These funds – awarded to grantees who have already achieved success in their work to clean up and redevelop brownfields – will help spur economic development, create local jobs and encourage public, private and non-profit collaboration in expediting Brownfield projects in distressed communities,” said Mathy Stanislaus, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response. “The RLF supplemental recipients are some of the nation’s top performers. Collectively, these grantees have already leveraged more than 1,700 jobs and $340 million in cleanup and redevelopment investment – the RLF funding today will help sustain that incredible progress.”
As part of the projects, affordable housing units will be built in place of some of the Brownfields. Sites in New York, Vermont, and Kansas City have already been marked as recipients of the funding and projects, among others.
It’s been estimated that the U.S. has more than 450,000 abandoned and contaminated Brownfields. For more information on the cleanup, please click here.
