China to Remove Millions of High Emissions Vehicles

In order to help combat the high amount of pollution and smog that China is currently facing, the Chinese government is planning to remove six million high-emission vehicles from the road.

Earlier this week, the Ministry of Environmental Protection announced that the Chinese government will be removing high-emission vehicles from roads in Beijing, Hebei Province, Tianjin, and other municipalities along the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta.

China’s Cabinet launched the initiative and is asking local authorities to begin the removal process by forming policies and stronger laws to extract the vehicles from the roads.

Greenhouse gas emissions have been a large contributor to the smog across the country. Beijing alone is responsible for 30 percent of the particulate matter that creates the air pollution. High-emission vehicles that do not meet the emissions standard make up more than 10 percent of the country’s overall emissions.
