The Annual U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory Now Available

Earlier today, the EPA released the 18th annual report of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, which shows that emissions decreased by 1.6 percent in 2011 from 2010.

The EPA’s annual greenhouse gas (GHG) report shows that the reduction in emissions is due in part to improvements in electricity generation and fuel efficiency. The EPA is also working on increasing fuel efficiency to reduce U.S. dependence on oil by approximately 12 billion barrel by 2025 and using the Energy Star program to save $24 million in utility bills for 2012.

In order to get this latest annual inventory, the EPA tracked GHG emissions levels from 1990 to 2011 and also calculates carbon dioxide emissions that are removed from the atmosphere. EPA prepares the annual report in collaboration with other federal agencies and after gathering comments from stakeholders across the country.
