Egypt to Get First Zero Liquid Discharge Plant
The Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Company (ETHYDCO) has entered into a contract with Aquatech to provide a water treatment facility, which will also include the first Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plant for Egypt.
On March 25, a signing ceremony was held in Cairo to declare the contract between Aquatech and ETHYDCO. More than 100 guests attended the ceremony, celebrating the new water treatment facility that with house the first ZLD plant in Egypt. The plant will be built in Alexandria, at ETHYDCO’s petroleum derivatives manufacturing site.
Dr. Millauer, who was asked to speak on the project, stated, “This is a bold initiative undertaken by ETHYDCO, which will be the pioneer in installing a ZLD plant. The feed water to the plant will be a composite mix of treated effluent and water from Nile River canal, having inconsistent water chemistry throughout the year. After a lot of due diligence done by ETHYDCO and its consultant Enppi, Aquatech's proposed schematic was selected because it can optimally treat this type of feed water.”
The new plant will treat wastewater from the manufacturing site in Alexandria and the cooling tower blowdown in order to get cooling tower makeup water, boiler feed water, and achieve ZLD. The plant, which has been designed and will be installed by Aquatech, is scheduled for completion in 13 months.
