NAS Elects New VP and Councilors

A new vice president and four new councilors have been elected to the National Academy of Science (NAS) governing Council. Their terms will officially begin on July 1, 2013.

The newly elected vice president to serve a four-year term for the NAS is Diane E. Griffin, the Distinguished University Service Professor and Alfred and Jill Sommer Chair in the department of molecular microbiology and immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Griffin will be responsible for the Academy’s scientific programs and activities related to communicating with the public about science.

The new councilors are Stephen E. Fienberg, Mary-Claire King, Frank M. Richter, and Peter G. Wolynes.

Feinberg is a Maurice Falk University Professor of Statistics and Social Science for the department of statistics at Carnegie Mellon University. King is an American Cancer Society Research Professor, departments of medicine and genome sciences at the University of Washington. Richter serves as Sewell Avery Distinguished Service Professor, department of the geophysical sciences at the University of Chicago. Wolynes is the D.R. Bullard-Welch Foundation Professor of Science and Professor of Chemistry, Center for Theoretical Biological Physics at Rice University.
