12 New Superfund Sites Announced
A total of 1,676 sites have been listed since 1983, and to date only 360 of those cleanups have been completed.
EPA announced it is adding 12 new hazardous waste sites to the National Priorities List to be cleaned up under the Superfund program and is proposing to add eight other sites to the list. State officials agreed to all of the listing decisions, according to the agency's Sept. 13 announcement.
"Cleaning up contamination is vitally important to the health of America's communities," said Mathy Stanislaus, assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response. "Putting clean land back into productive use leads to increases in property values, generates new jobs, and creates a stronger local economy that will strengthen these communities for years to come."
A total of 1,676 sites have been listed since 1983, and to date only 360 of those cleanups have been completed. With the eight newly proposed ones, there are 54 proposed sites awaiting final EPA action. THe agency's announcement said contaminants found at the 20 new sites include acetone, arsenic, benzene, cadmium, chromium, copper, dichloroethene, hexavalent chromium, lead, mercury, methyl ethyl ketone, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, tetrachloroethylene, pentachlorophenol, trichloroethane, trichloroethylene, xylene, and zinc.
These 12 sites have been added to the list:
- Alabama Plating Company, Inc. (former electroplater), Vincent, Ala.
- Cedar Chemical Corporation (former chemical manufacturer), West Helena, Ark.
- Fairfax St. Wood Treaters (former wood treating operation), Jacksonville, Fla.
- Bautsch-Gray Mine (former lead and zinc mine), Galena, Ill.
- EVR-Wood Treating/Evangeline Refining Company (former wood treating operation), Jennings, La.
- Leeds Metal (abandoned scrap metal facility), Leeds, Maine
- Holcomb Creosote Co (former wood treating operation), Yadkinville, N.C.
- Orange Valley Regional Ground Water Contamination (contaminated ground water plume), Orange/West Orange, N.J.
- Peters Cartridge Factory (former ammunition manufacturer), Kings Mills, Ohio
- West Troy Contaminated Aquifer (contaminated ground water plume), Troy, Ohio
- Circle Court Ground Water Plume (contaminated ground water plume), Willow Park, Texas
- U.S. Oil Recovery (former used oil recovery operation), Pasadena, Texas
EPA announced it is withdrawing its proposal to add the Evergreen Manor Ground Water Contamination site in Winnebago County, Ill. to the list because remedial action has been completed there.
