Opponents have not given up, however. They hope to collect enough signatures to hold a referendum next year.
Portland, Ore.'s city council voted 5-0 Sept. 12 to add fluoride to the city's drinking water after a raucous council meeting from which several opponents were removed. Opponents plan to collect enough signatures to hold a referendum, putting the issue to a public vote in May 2014.
Mayor Sam Adams championed the issue and presided over the meeting, during which he "ejected several audience members and repeatedly reminded others to remain quiet," Beth Slovic reported in The Oregonian.
Portland has been the only major U.S. city not to approve fluoridation, and its residents have voted against it three times, including in 1980, she reported Sept. 13.
