Key Performance Indicators Saving Millions at Maersk
Maersk Line reports it has saved almost $90 million since 2009 by using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure the performance of individual ships. And since Jan. 1, the largest owners of chartered vessels have received scorecards and benchmarks on energy, with each KPI rated monthly and merged into an overall KPI score for each owner.
The overall scorecard tracks energy, safety, daily running costs, and best practice sharing, but for now dollars saved are calculated only for the energy KPI, according to the company. It has measured 160,000 tons of fuel saved through higher propulsion efficiency.
"If you can't measure something, you can't control it. If you can't control it, you can't improve it,” said Anup Rajan, performance manager in Maersk Line Vessel Management. “It is essential to realize that the scorecards are only a valuable tool if they help facilitate decision-making amongst stakeholders."
Maersk Line is part of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, based in Copenhagen, Denmark and employing about 108,000 people.
