Recycling Facility Joins Cal/OSHA SHARP Program

"There are just over 1 million employers in California and of those, only 42 are current SHARP recipients," said Cal/OSHA Area Manager Kelly Howard.

Cal/OSHA officials presented a California Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program award on March 17 to BLT Enterprises for its exemplary record in protecting workers at a recycling and waste transfer facility in Fremont, Calif. The recognition, approved by Cal/OSHA chief Len Welsh, places BLT and the Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station in rarefied company.

"There are just over 1 million employers in California and of those, only 42 are current SHARP recipients," said Cal/OSHA Area Manager Kelly Howard. "It normally takes a company between two to three years to achieve SHARP recognition, and many employers can't complete the process. BLT Enterprises achieved SHARP recognition in one year, which clearly demonstrates the commitment of its employees and management team to workplace safety. What BLT has accomplished is exceptional and truly rare."

"BLT Enterprises is extremely proud of the efforts and achievements of our employees towards creating and maintaining an exceptionally safe working environment for all who enter our Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station," said BLT Safety Director Mario Quezada.

In 2008, the company received Golden Gate recognition from Cal/OSHA for implementing and maintaining a highly effective safety program shortly after the facility began its recycling and solid waste transfer operations. The Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station handles the recycling and disposal needs of residents living in Fremont, Newark, and Union City. It recycled 24,000 tons of material in 2010.
