Nature Center Opts for Algaewheel Technology to Treat Wastewater

The Cincinnati Nature Center will take advantage of a symbiotic relationship between algae and bacteria to manage wastewater at Rowe Woods using a packaged system from Oldcastle Precast.

Oldcastle Precast has signed an agreement with Cincinnati Nature Center to install an AlgaePac Packaged Wastewater Treatment System at the Rowe Woods location in Milford, Ohio.

Cincinnati Nature Center, a non-profit, environmental education and land preservation organization, seeks to inspire passion for nature and promote environmentally responsible choices through experience, education, and stewardship to ensure a sustainable future.

The system is the first of its kind to be installed in Ohio and is a key component in the Nature Center’s expansion plans over the next few years, which include the opening of the Marge and Charles Schott Nature Playscape and the addition of a preschool.

According to Mark Bauer, Water/Wastewater Systems specialist for the company, “several key factors influencing [Cincinnati Nature Center's] decision to move forward are the tremendous green attributes of the system, with low-energy and reduced carbon footprint leading the way.”

The system features patented Algaewheel technology that uses a symbiotic relationship between algae and bacteria. Algae grow in the system by converting nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous), sunlight, and carbon dioxide to algae and oxygen. The oxygen is used by bacteria in the system to digest solids and to produce more carbon dioxide for use by the algae.

The company’s Hartford City, Ind., plant will provide the system and its service division in Indianapolis will provide turn-key installation of the system, as well as a packaged lift station and force main collection system. The manufacture and construction of the wastewater treatment plant is expected to be complete by early spring. The engineering firm for this project is Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc., of Cincinnati.
