Minnesota Farmer Offers Plain Speaking in 'EcoCommerce 101'

Tim Gieseke's book illustrates a practical method to identify environmental values and makes a case for bringing the externalities of agriculture and business into the economic accounting framework.

"EcoCommerce 101" describes how an economic market signal, rather than regulation, will be the preferred model in meeting the nation’s and global environmental interests such as maintaining soil productivity, carbon sequestration, generating fresh water supplies, and meeting increasing food demands.

EcoCommerce 101

The interest in an ecocommerce-type framework is rising and there is an overall trend away from relying on government-based solutions. The message about a market-driven solution that EcoCommerce 101 provides resonates with agriculturalists of all types and in many countries. Additionally, major corporations such as Walmart, Nestle, Syngenta and other multi-nationals are promoting a new “sustainability” philosophy that is gaining social and consumer support.

Advance endorsements praise Gieseke’s ability to illustrate a practical and effective method to identify environmental values and make a compelling case for the need to bring the externalities of agriculture and business into the accounting framework of economics.

Tim Gieseke holds a master's degree in environmental sciences with conservation design and farm policy experience. In addition to farming, he is president of Ag Resource Strategies, LLC. He was recently asked to serve on Solutions for the Land Dialogue, a national effort initiated by the United Nations Foundation to integrate agriculture, forestry, and conservation solutions.
