ACHMM Unveils Online Course for Hazmat Managers

The Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers on May 24 launched the first-ever online version of its Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management (EHMM) course, a cross-training educational tool designed for environmental, health, safety, and security professionals.

Focusing on existing and recently updated hazmat management subjects, the tool serves as a preparation course for the Certified Hazardous Materials Manager® (CHMM®) credential examination and enables CHMM holders to earn certification maintenance points (CMPs) to maintain their credential.

"By creating an online version of the Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management course, ACHMM has created a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week learning tool for its members and others in the EHS&S industry," said ACHMM Executive Director A. Cedric Calhoun, CAE. "This state-of-art, distance-learning resource provides countless opportunities--regardless if you are in the office, at home, or on the road--to keep current on technical, regulatory and other developments in the hazardous materials management profession."

The course provides instruction about federal environmental laws and regulations; compliance standards; health requirements; state-of-the-art technologies; and best practices. Calhoun noted that the online version allows users to take the course at their own pace rather than in the classroom, where it is typically delivered over three days. With the online version, individual courses and tests can be completed in one hour and automatically generate requisite records and reports. The individual courses and corollary discussions are based on the Hazardous Materials Management Desk Reference, and the course content is based on the blueprint of the CHMM examination developed by the Institute for Hazardous Materials Management.

The EHMM course is endorsed by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Environmental Training Office and has received approval of CMPs from IHMM for CHMMs and may be available for other industry designation holders who take the course. More information about the course is available at www.achmm.org/jump/online_ehmm.htm or by contacting ACHMM at (800) 437-0137.
