Is reading a book a waste of time these days?

Co-op Reading Club Seeks Reviewers

In an Environmental Protection poll that launched this week, we asked visitors if they would be interested in reviewing books for the website. I'm not sure if anyone has time for reading, but the idea would be that a person could read the book and write a 500-word review that would be posted on this website. Others wouldn't have to read the book if it was "a waste of time," or pick it up if the subject matter was "compelling."

Publishers send books to this office fairly regularly and they are piling up on the bookshelf. I really don't want to throw these into the recycling bin if someone would find them useful.

Here is a list of the titles on hand:

Before Earth Day: The Origins of American Environmental Law, 1945-1970
Bombast: Spinning Atoms in the Desert
Chasing Molecules
Conservation & Biodiversity Banking
Design for Flooding
The Greatest Challenge of Our Time
Guide to LEED 2009
Guide to LEED AP
Heatstroke
How the Government Got in Your Backyard
In Deep Water: The Anatomy of a Disaster, the Fate of the Gulf, and How to End our Oil Addiction
Planting Green Roofs and Living Walls
The Polluters
Protecting New Jersey's Environment
The Rising Sea
Understanding Sea-level Rise and Variability
The Vertical Farm
Wild New Jersey

If none of these titles spark your interest, I may be able to request specific topics from publishers. Reviewers and readers alike should feel free to share their preferences. Of course, potential reviewers will need to provide information about their expertise before any books are shipped to them, and deadlines will be attached to the reviews.

As always, I appreciate your feedback.

FYI, I want to remind you that Lee Ferrell, who works with Schneider Electric's Water Wastewater Competency Center and also is an Environmental Protection editorial adviser, will present a webinar on Wednesday about designing energy efficiency into water and wastewater facilities. You can read more about that here. Ferrell also has provided commentary in the Quiet Waters blog.
