Groundwater Cleanup Proposed for Vestal Water Supply in New York

The EPA has proposed a cleanup plan for the heavily contaminated Vestal Water Supply Well 1-1 Superfund site in Vestal, New York.

The Vestal Water Supply Well 1-1 Superfund site in New York contains unsettled organic compounds that are causing soil and groundwater contamination. The Superfund also contains polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which is known to adversely affect the endocrine, nervous, immune and reproductive systems and could potentially create cancer.

The EPA has proposed a plan that will thermally treat and remove those compounds from the area. The cleanup is expected to cause $14.5 million.

“Groundwater is a vital public resource,” said EPA Regional Administrator Judith A. Enck. “The EPA’s top priority is protecting public health and the environment. This proposal addresses a legacy of toxic pollution that will help clean up this community’s groundwater.”

A public meeting is scheduled for August 30, where the EPA will explain the plan and the chosen treatment processes. Currently, the drinking water supply is regularly monitored.
