World’s Largest Solar Boat Coming to U.S. in June

On Monday, June 3, MS Turanor PlanetSolar will be making its way to the Sunset Harbour Yacht Club in Miami Beach, Fla. This is the first time the largest solar powered boat will be in the U.S.

MS Turanor PlanetSolar is the world’s largest solar-powered yacht and has broken the Guinness World record for the fastest crossing across the transatlantic without any use of fuel or emissions. The boat will be making its U.S. debut on June 3, in Miami Beach, Fla.

Its trip to the U.S. begins its scientific expedition in which scientists will study climate change as they’re aboard the yacht. This will be its second global tour and starts the 2013 “PlanetSolar Deep Water” voyage. Scientists from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) will be collecting data samples from water and air to study climate regulation, aerosols, phytoplankton, and large whirlpools. The scientists will also be cleaning up plastic waste as they travel and will hold environmental educational events in port cities.

While the yacht is in Miami, students from inner-city schools and from the Florida International University will be able to tour the boat and have an opportunity to learn more about environmental and climate issues.
