Steven Solomon to Speak on Water Scarcity at WEFTEC2010

Steven Solomon, an esteemed economics journalist and author of Water: The Epic Struggle for Wealth, Power, and Civilization, will deliver the keynote address during the Opening General Session of WEFTEC 2010 in New Orleans, La.

The opening session will kick off the Water Environment Federation’s 83rd annual technical exhibition and conference, a four-day event that is expected to draw thousands of water quality professionals to the New Orleans Morial Convention Center from October 2-6.

During his career as an economics journalist, Solomon has written articles for prominent newspapers and magazine, served as a regular commentator on NPR’s Marketplace, and appeared as a featured guest on various television news programs. Through his book, Solomon offers a narrative portrait of water and the resulting power struggles, personalities, and breakthroughs that have shaped humanity from antiquity's earliest civilizations to the world we live in today.

Recognizing that freshwater scarcity is one of the 21st century's decisive, looming challenges and is driving the new political, economic, and environmental realities across the globe, Solomon will share his insights about the key role water has had in the development of modern societies, and the growing issues over scarcity and pollution, that could lead to a global crisis unless we adopt more sustainable approaches to water management.

Housing and online registration for WEFTEC 2010 will open on March 30. Details about the conference, the opening general session, and related events will be available at www.weftec.org.
