Many times when people think of chemicals, they conjure up images of scary-looking yellow drums, containing unknown but presumably hazardous goo. These images are pervasive because the public often lacks proper education and understanding about the important role of chemistry in our lives, the nature of chemicals and chemical reactions, and the robust safety protocols established and enforced within the chemical industry and across the broader manufacturing sector. A recent initiative from the International Council of Chemical Associations hopes to help clear up some of the public’s misconceptions about chemistry and chemical safety with a strategy to bring more information to the public about the chemicals the industry produces.
The Global Product Strategy (GPS) is the global chemical industry’s contribution to the United Nations Environment Programme’s commitment to ensuring that chemicals are used and produced in a way that has minimal impact on the environment and human health. Through the GPS, leaders from the chemical industry conduct product safety and product stewardship training for chemical companies and governments in emerging geographies, in addition to establishing best practices for improved transparency and information-sharing with the public.

Gregory G. Bond, Ph.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.E.
Greg Bond is corporate director of Product Responsibility for The Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Mich.
In this position, Bond provides leadership for the company’s product stewardship programs globally. He also directs Dow's Toxicology & Environmental Research and Consulting organization, which provides testing, research and consultative services for its businesses.
He joined Dow as an epidemiologist in 1979. In 1991, he moved to the product stewardship area. From March 2006 until Dec. 1, 2008, Bond held the additional role of Asia Pacific EH&S director and was based in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China.
Bond is currently co-chairing the International Council of Chemical Association’s Chemicals Policy and Health Leadership Group, which is working to improve the product safety performance of the global chemical industry, its reputation and strengthen science and risk-based chemicals management legislation and regulation throughout the world. He was the recipient of the 2009 Distinguished Leadership Award from the American Chemistry Council for this work.
