Cleanup Plan Modernized for Charles George Landfill Superfund Site

Significant updates to the Charles George Landfill cleanup plan will improve groundwater capture, expand treatment capacity, and address emerging contaminants at the Massachusetts Superfund site.

The EPA has finalized an Explanation of Significant Difference (ESD) for the Charles George Reclamation Trust Landfill Superfund Site in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts.

The ESD updates the 1988 Record of Decision, which addressed contaminated groundwater migration, landfill gas treatment, and contaminated sediment removal. The new remedial alternative represents a significant change to the selected remedy but does not alter the overall scope, performance, or cost.

According to the EPA, the changes will modernize the outdated treatment system, improve contaminated groundwater capture, and allow the system to address emerging contaminants that were not considered in the original design.

Key updates include adding site-specific contaminants of concern and cleanup levels, modifying remedial objectives, improving and expanding the on-site groundwater collection system, and treating and discharging groundwater on-site rather than through municipal sewer and wastewater treatment systems.
