Ohio EPA Offers Alternative Fuel Vehicle Conversion Grants

A new grant from Ohio EPA will reimburse owners of large diesel or gasoline vehicles for a portion of the cost of the conversion or replacement of engines to use compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, or liquid petroleum gas such as propane or butane, including bi-fueled or dual-fueled vehicles that can run on both an alternative fuel and on gasoline or diesel fuel.

A new grant from Ohio EPA will reimburse owners of large diesel or gasoline vehicles for a portion of the cost of the conversion or replacement of engines to use compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, or liquid petroleum gas such as propane or butane, including bi-fueled or dual-fueled vehicles that can run on both an alternative fuel and on gasoline or diesel fuel. The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Conversion Grant program is supported with $5 million allocated by the Ohio General Assembly from the Alternative Fuel Transportation Fund of the Ohio Developmental Services Agency.

The conversion of vehicles to cleaner fuels and technologies reduces diesel emissions such as nitrogen oxide and fine particulates, helping improve air quality.

The program applies to owners of diesel- or gasoline-powered class 7 and 8 vehicles (weighing at least 26,000 pounds). In order to be eligible, vehicles also must be registered in Ohio for operation on public highways and be used in business. Additionally, over half the miles driven must be within Ohio. The limit on the total grant award to applicants seeking to replace or convert multiple vehicles is $400,000.

The grant application and guidelines for alternative fuel vehicle conversion grants is available on the Ohio EPA Office of Environmental Education site. Applications may be emailed to derg@epa.ohio.gov beginning March 6, 2018, and eligible applications will be funded on a first-come, first-served basis until all available funds have been allocated.
