South Bronx Readies Workers for Gulf Spill Cleanup

A team of 15 environmental workers from the South Bronx will spend a minimum of one month in communities along the Gulf Coast helping with oil spill operations. The workers, trained by Sustainable South Bronx (SSBx), are currently being deployed to clean-up operations in Moss Point, Miss.

A pioneer in training inner-city workers for various environmental specialties including ecological restoration, wetland restoration, stream bank stabilization and environmental remediation, SSBx program graduates are certified in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPWER), 10-Hour OSHA and Herbicide/Pesticide Applicator.

Over the last six years more than 175 ecological and environmental specialists have graduated from the program.

Sustainable South Bronx is a non-profit, community-based organization that takes an innovative, solutions-driven approach to the economic and environmental issues that affect residents of urban areas.
