URS-led Team to Manage Waste at Savannah River Site

URS Corp. on Dec. 8 announced that a joint venture led by the company has been awarded the contract to manage the liquid waste portion of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Savannah River Site, located in Aiken, S.C.

The performance-based, cost plus award fee contract has a potential maximum value of approximately $3.3 billion to the joint venture over a six-year base performance period. The contract also includes an additional two-year option.

The URS-led team, Savannah River Remediation, LLC (SRR), was formed by URS' Washington Division, Bechtel National, Inc., CH2M HILL Constructors, Inc., and Babcock & Wilcox Technical Services Group, Inc. SRR will be responsible for the closure of waste tanks, the operation of the Savannah River Site's Defense Waste Processing Facility and its associated production and disposal facilities, and tank farm operations.

Tom Zarges, president of URS' Washington Division said, "URS has a long history of supporting the DOE's environmental management and nuclear operations programs and has managed many successful projects at the Savannah River Site. Our extensive experience in liquid waste treatment includes vitrification of high-level waste and closure of waste tanks." Zarges continued, "We look forward to deploying new technologies and innovative ideas under this contract that we expect will deliver safe, results-oriented liquid waste management services to our client."
