Navy Awards AMEC Remediation Contract

AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, on Feb. 26 announced it is one of only four companies to receive a major new environmental remediation contract from the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Southwest.

The performance-based environmental, multiple award contract is for one base year initially, followed by four one-year option periods, which together have a total potential value of $120 million.

The work will be located at Naval and Marine Corps installations primarily in California but also potentially in Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, and other states.

AMEC will restore various contaminated sites, remediating such contaminants as solvents, petroleum oils and lubricants, metals, acids, bases, reactives, non-explosive ordnance residues or compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and pesticides in soils, sediments, groundwater, sludge, surface water, and man-made structures.

The contract scope includes preparing decision documents, designs, community plans, and other technical supporting documents, as well as performing remedial, removal, expedited and emergency-response actions; undertaking pilot and treatability studies; and providing facility operation, maintenance and instruction.

"This is an exciting award because performance-based environmental restoration represents a new approach to remediation contracting that will bring efficiency and predictability," said Paul Pettit, executive vice president of the firm's Earth & Environmental Division.

The performance-based approach focuses on remediation objectives and standards. It encourages innovation and uses the expertise of the contractor to develop and implement the best means of achieving cleanup goals.

The three other contract awardees were the Shaw Group, ITSI, and TN & Associates.
