Nonprofit Affordable Housing Developer Receives Grant for Green Renovations
The Bank of Sacramento recently gave Sacramento affordable housing developer Mutual Housing California a grant for green renovations.
Mutual Housing California has received a $5,000 grant from the Bank of Sacramento that will help the nonprofit rehabilitate Greenway Village Mutual Housing Community and 54 South Sacramento apartments that house low-income families, including ones from St. John’s Shelter Program for Women and Children.
“We have an ongoing collaboration with St. John’s to help homeless women and children become permanent residents of Greenway,” said Rachel Iskow, Mutual Housing California CEO. “Maintaining this crucial resource for them is of utmost importance to us.”
Originally acquired and renovated in 1994, the apartments have one- to five-bedrooms that house 160 people.
Green renovations of the 16 two-story buildings include:
- Installing solar thermal panels to reduce the nonprofit’s operating costs and resident utility costs;
- installing a new storm drain system, with drains throughout the courtyard and planter areas;
- replacing exteriors with environmentally sustainable and extremely durable siding;
- replacing all roofs and windows;
- replacing the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC) with a high-efficiency, forced air split-system;
- updating appliances, cabinets, countertops, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, bath tubs and surrounds, and floor and window coverings with healthier, green materials.
Residents will be temporarily relocated during the year-long renovation that should be completed in November 2014.
