Chemical Plant Reaches Clean Air Case Settlement
Montgomery Chemicals violated the Clean Air Act by not properly reporting and recording methanol emissions. The company has agreed to pay fines and correct all violations according to EPA standards.
Montgomery Chemicals, a chemical plant located in Conshohocken, Pa., produces methanol as it manufactures sodium borohydride, a bleaching agent used in the paper industry. During at EPA inspection, it was discovered that the company was violating the Clean Air Act due to methanol emissions, monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting that was not up to EPA standards.
The EPA fined the chemical company $30,000 and has asked that all violations be corrected within six months, which Montgomery Chemicals has agreed to. Also, the company will be installing a new scrubber that will help control emissions, as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
