Air Monitoring Protects Sanford During Remedial Action

The Sanford Gasification Plant Site Group has chosen GEI Consultants, Inc., of Glastonbury, Conn., to perform air monitoring at the site in Sanford, Fla.

A former manufactured gas plant (MGP) located in Seminole County, Fla., the site is affected by organic and inorganic MGP-related contaminants. To address these issues, the PRP Group is performing a remedial action regulated under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Serving as the air monitoring contractor, GEI is supporting the planning, implementation and documentation of a comprehensive perimeter air monitoring program during the remedial action. In conjunction with the Sanford Group; NRT, the project engineer; and WRS Compass, the remediation contractor, GEI will monitor vapor phase, fugitive dust and odor emissions, reporting the results to the project management team for implementation of appropriate control and mitigation measures.

The contractor's experience implementing air monitoring plans at former MGP sites includes using AirLogicsTM and zNose®. In conjunction with EPRI, GEI developed the use of the zNose® for onsite detection and quantification of naphthalene, a component of MGP waste, and often the driver for odor-related issues during remediation projects. Major elements of the perimeter air monitoring program includes automated real-time air monitoring using the AirLogics™ system, confirmatory 24-hour time-weighted average air sampling and periodic perimeter monitoring using hand-held instrumentation.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2010.
