Pitney Bowes Recycles 14.5 Million Pounds of Waste in 2009

Pitney Bowes Inc. last year recycled 14,532,290 pounds of waste, thereby avoiding 26,938 metric tons of carbon emissions. Verified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the company’s participation in the WasteWise program, this amount of carbon emissions is equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions from 4,932 passenger vehicles.

“Environmental responsibility is an important part of our effort to provide sustainable value to customers and shareholders,” said Ellen Huang, director, environmental affairs, at the company. “Our collaboration with the U.S. EPA enables us to track our waste reduction efforts year after year, which is a great barometer of progress for us.”

In 2008, the company recycled 13,686,766 pounds of waste. The 2009 increase is due in part to a secure destruction program that recycles paper after it is shredded.

The company’s recycling of waste is a part of a broader initiative to measure, analyze and reduce its carbon footprint. In 2010, Pitney Bowes will participate in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP8) questionnaire for a third year, affirming its commitment to measuring carbon emissions and reducing environmental impact. An analysis of the company's responses is expected from the CDP in September.

Celebrating its 90th year of innovation, Pitney Bowes provides software, hardware and services that integrate physical and digital communications channels. It is a $5.6 billion company and employs 33,000 worldwide.
