Tom Casten Earns Lifetime Achievement Award
Tom Casten, founder of Recycled Energy Development, received the Platts Lifetime Achievement Award for his work creating ultra-efficient energy systems in the United States.
Many of the systems Casten developed are similar to what Denmark has used to revolutionize its energy system and slash its greenhouse emissions over the past 30 years.
The U.S.’s leading figure in industrial energy efficiency, Casten was instrumental in crafting and promoting the industrial energy efficiency incentives in the current iteration of the Markey-Waxman bill, as well as in the 2009 stimulus, 2008 financial rescue and 2007 energy bill. Over the past three decades at several energy firms, he has developed and managed 250 clean power projects valued at more than $2 billion. One of those projects at an Indiana steel plant generated more clean electricity in 2006 than all the grid-connected solar panels in the world.
"As the founder and president of several energy companies, Casten has succeeded since 1975 in simultaneously slashing power costs and greenhouse gas emissions, and as an author and the founder of numerous advocacy groups, he has precipitated policy changes that have advanced industrial energy recycling and efficiency,"Platts noted in announcing the Lifetime Achievement Award.
