EPA Distributes Grants to Missouri, Kansas

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded $477,000 to Joplin, Mo., for the construction of the Wildwood Ranch sewer system, according to an Oct. 5 press release.

Wildwood Ranch is a proposed 2,075-acre development on the border of Jasper and Newton counties, both of which have approved the rezoning for this site. The grant will help fund the construction of a sewer system that will convey the wastewater to Joplin’s existing Shoal Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.

EPA Region 7 Acting Regional Administrator William Rice said, "EPA is proud to award these water infrastructure funds which will help to protect public health and the water quality in the Joplin, Mo., area.”

The agency also awarded $1,146,000 to Rural Water District No. 4 (RWD #4) of Chautauqua County, Kan., for expansion of its drinking water distribution system.

RWD #4 is a new water district serving most of the eastern half of Chautauqua County, Kan. The existing private wells are of poor quality and provide inadequate quantity of water. The grant will help fund the construction of 56 miles of pipeline to provide safe drinking water to 78 additional users.
